DHL, a global shipping and delivery company, agreed to settle a race discrimination class action filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Chicago. The lawsuit alleged that DHL segregated its Black employees from White employees, gave Black employees deliveries to neighborhoods with higher crime rates – with Black employees often witnessing crime and at times becoming crime victims during their deliveries, and gave Black employees more strenuous work, such as heavy lifting, versus easier work given to White employees, like letter sorting. As part of the settlement, DHL agreed to pay a total of $8.7M to 83 Black employees.
What would a respectful workplace have done?
Discrimination can come in many forms, and it can be intentional or unintentional. Respectful workplaces ensure that all employees are treated fairly and equitably in all aspects of employment regardless of protected characteristics such as race. That not only includes in terms of hiring, firing, pay, and job titles, but also things like job assignments, performance evaluations, and segregation.
