When I was terminated, I asked for documentation of the reason for my termination but my manager refused. Isn’t he required to give me a reason that is documented?
Steve Duggan replies:
A few states require a written reason for termination for certain kinds of jobs. However, if you were working for a private employer, your employment was almost certainly “at-will”, which means you can be fired at any time, without notice, and without any reason. There are some reasons for termination that are illegal, such as a termination motivated by age, disability, gender, whistleblowing, etc. If you know why you were fired and suspect that the reason was illegal, you should consult with a local employment law attorney.
