An employee who’s worked for me for 1.5 years has voluntarily quit, with his last day on 11/30. Am I obligated to give him a Christmas bonus? Thanks.

Ann Kiernan replies:
The answer depends entirely on your company policy and past practice. If you have always required employees to still be on the job at bonus time, you can continue that practice. But, if in prior years you have paid a Christmas bonus to employees who left before the holiday, then you should pay this employee.
