Steve Duggan replies:
This situation illustrates one of the many issues that confront managers who also have some kind of personal or social relationship with employees, or members of their family, outside of work. It is absolutely not OK for a manager to discuss employment decisions about an employee with anyone who does not have a need to know, including their adult or minor family members. If you can, I urge you to discuss this with your boss and respectfully let him know that he does not have your permission to do this, and that he should restrict his comments to your children to the group related matters. If you find it difficult to talk to him about this, you should consult with either your HR partner or one of his managers.
