HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. will pay $18 million to settle federal and state claims that the company deliberately used reorganization plans to cut out older workers in favor of younger employees. According to court documents, more than 350 former employees are eligible for an average payout of $50,000 each. The proposed settlement also provides that plaintiffs’ counsel can seek up to 25%, or $4.5 million, of the gross settlement amount for their legal work.
What would a respectful workplace have done?
Respectful workplaces don’t make business decisions based on an individual’s age, sex, race, or other protected characteristic. Employers with anti-discrimination, harassment, and retaliation policies; who train managers on those policies; and who hold their employees accountable have the best chance of creating and maintaining a respectful workplace – and staying out of court!
