I have been working the same hours for two years. Now my manager wants to change my hours without any notice, is this legal?
Steve Duggan replies:
Unless you have a contract with the employer that says your hours cannot be changed, then its manager can generally change your hours without notice. It would certainly not be respectful or professional to do so without some advance warning and explanation, but the law does not require that. Of course, in some circumstances, if the adverse action of changing work hours was motivated by some form of illegal motivation, such as race, disability, gender, or retaliation, then the law would be violated. If you feel that such a motivation may be present, I recommend that you contact your HR representative. If unable to do so for some reason, then you should contact a local employment attorney.
